Voguester Blogs About his Houston visit
Vogue editor Hamish Bowles ♥ Hou
Hamish Bowles sure seems bowled over by his recent visit to Houston. The Vogue magazine contributor and world's dandiest dandy devotes his The Hamishphere blog on Vogue.com to the charms of the Bayou City and our social swells. "I may never recover from my weekend in Houston as the guest of the effervescent philanthropist Becca Cason Thrash and her equally engaging husband, John," Bowles writes in his blog posting titled "Texas Ranger."
Bowles muses whether alligators are lurking in Buffalo Bayou behind the Thrash manor and wonders if "Becca had denuded every florist in Texas and Mexico of lilac roses" at the dinner party she and her husband threw in his honor because "the table fairly groaned under the weight of them."
Other observations:
- Bowles coveted Milton Townsend’s 20-gallon Tom Mix Stetson but didn't pilfer it because the label proclaimed "LIKE HELL IT’S YOURS This Hat Belongs To . . . ". Bowles plan to visit the Hat Store on Richmond Avenue on his next Houston visit to buy one of his own.
- The steaks served at the Thrash dinner were of "hubcap proportions."
- Before Bowles sang a medley of Noël Coward songs after dinner, "Becca had warned me that she would not be able to control a house full of tequila-fueled Texans, but of course they couldn’t have been more polite and gratifyingly appreciative."
- At the Houston Ballet Ball, Bowles was impressed by best-dressed Laura Spalding, Lynn Wyatt, Laura Casey and Diane Lokey Farb's "eye-popping emeralds." Before leaving town he toured the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Menil Collection and the Rothko Chapel, which he termed "profoundly moving and sobering." He closes by writing, "Houston certainly delivers—fun, fashion, and culture."
Hey, Hamish, come back and visit anytime.
