On the Lam at eBay: Designer asks voters to pick five easy pieces
During Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, designer Derek Lam showed a luxurious and expensive fall collection featuring unusual fabric combinations — a cotton coat with waxed fur sleeves; an evening gown with a leather bodice — and distinctive styles (a tomato red coat featured no sleeves, perfect for warmer weather climates like Houston's where layering wards off most chills).
A few days later, at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, Lam featured another line exclusively for eBay. The 16-piece collection, called Derek Lam + eBay, includes dresses in denim and floral prints, with gathered hems or cut close to the body, and evening gowns in black or white cotton poplin. The collection is simple, unadorned and reasonably priced, ranging from $125-$295.
Here's the twist: eBay will produce only the top five pieces selected by voters who log onto the site — www.dereklam.ebay.com — through Monday. The winners will be announced on March 1 and available for sale on the site in May.
Right now the leader is a floor-length "black tie dress," but as voters in CultureMap's Bracket Challenge know, anything can happen.
