NEW YORK — Jenna Bush Hager admits that her life is about to change in a big way. The 31-year-old former first daughter and Today show correspondent is expecting a baby in a couple of months. We caught up with her on the front row at the Lela Rose fall 2013 show Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
CultureMap: How's your pregnancy going?
Jenna Bush Hager: It's good. I'm seven months, so I feel like I'm getting larger and larger by the minute, which is what's supposed to happen. I've been really lucky. I've had a super-mild pregnancy. I'm just enjoying it. I'm working a lot, which is making it go by really fast. Since I'm in my last trimester now, I'm getting to the point we'd better get a lot done really fast.
CM: Do you know if it's a boy or a girl?
JBH: I don't. We'll find out when the baby's born.
CM: How excited are your parents (George and Laura Bush) to have a first grandchild?
JBH: They're thrilled. My mom is into the nursery decorating stage; she loves interior design. I think she's going to come up here for a while in March and we're going to get it all set up.
CM: How's your grandfather (George H.W. Bush) doing?
JBH: He's doing great. Thank you for asking. I think he's just getting back to normal life. We're just so thankful that he's recovered. It's miraculous. We're really, really happy.
CM: You're wearing a Lela Rose vest. Is that kind of it for now, until the pregnancy is over?
JBH: Actually some of her dresses that I bought one size larger at the sample sale, I can still squeeze into them. I know this is not going to last. But she makes some dresses that stretch, which I appreciate as a pregnant woman.)
CM: You have been a big fan of Lela's for a long time. (She made the bridesmaids dresses for Hager's wedding in 2008.)
JBH: She's from Texas as well. We grew up together. Her parents are really close friends with my parents. I love her sensibilities. I'm not much of a dress person. I wear pants all the time when I'm running around, flying, and I get cold. But her dresses are perfect. I appreciate that she can make dresses that feel really great and are really comfortable.
CM: You don't go to many shows, but you a front-row regular at Lela's.
JBH: I always come to Lela's, and I try to go to Oscar de la Renta's, too, just because I have a personal connection to both of them as friends more than fashion. I've known them both for a long time.
