A beloved and popular Houston holiday tradition is back, just in time for those in need of family-friendly outings. The annual Wortham Tree Lighting returns for its 33rd year, weaving the magic of the enchanting, old-world charm of The Nutcracker with modern immersive fun and IG-worthy moments.

In what's a perfect preview for anyone taking in The Nutcracker, which Houston Ballet will be performing at the Wortham during the holiday season, the event sees Fish Plaza outside the Wortham (at the Texas Avenue entrance) transformed into a Sugar Plum Plaza. Visitors can take in the fun from 11 am to 1 pm Wednesday, November 22 in the Wortham Theater Center's main lobby.

The annual festival centerpiece and namesake is the lighting of a giant Christmas tree adorned with more than 19,000 dazzling lights. Children and adults alike can mix and mingle — and snap photos with — costumed characters from The Nutcracker. Santa will be on hand to chat with naughty and nice attendees.

Performances by the Jalen Baker Trio (presented by DACAMERA), singers from Houston Grand Opera's Butler Studio, and musicians from Mercury Chamber Orchestra add to the fun. Parents and adults can check off holiday shopping lists at the arts and crafts market, while young ones enjoy story time with characters from The Nutcracker along with refreshments.

Outside, the chill air harks to a wintry wonderland, where guests can immerse themselves in light and sound by turning the wheels of life-sized hourglasses. More interactive fun comes via the giant time catchers, which come alive with singing, clapping, or generally loud merrymaking. A Harmonies music box art installation makes for a fine family holiday selfie backdrop.

Those who can't make Wednesday's lighting and opening ceremony can look forward to the Sugar Plum Plaza experience throughout the holiday season. Whether it's a warmup for Nutcracker show attendees or a downtown stop, the mini world is a sure bet for feel-good seasonal fun.
