Shocker: Willie Nelson arrested for marijuana possession
Oops, he did it again.
Country music legend Willie Nelson was arrested for possession of marijuana Friday after a U.S. Border Patrol official smelled a suspicious odor on his tour bus during a routine stop.
Traveling from California to his ranch near Austin, Nelson's bus was pulled over at a checkpoint in Sierra Blanca, Texas, around 85 miles east of El Paso, when the officer found six ounces of pot. Nelson said it was his, according to reports.
(Maybe he thought he was still in California, where marijuana for medical purposes is legal.)
The 77-year-old singer was detained briefly along with three others. He was released after paying a $2,500 bond.
Hudspeth County Sheriff Arvin West told the El Paso Times that Nelson could get 180 days in county jail (this is Texas, after all).
"If he does, I'm going to make him cook and clean. He can wear the stripy uniforms just like the other ones do," West said.
It is not the first drug-related brush with the law for Nelson, who is co-chair of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) advisory board, and has worked for years for marijuana legalization.
- In 2006, 1.5 pounds of marijuana and three ounces of hallucinogenic mushrooms were found on his bus in Louisiana. Nelson pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a $1,024 fine and six months probation.
- In 1995, Nelson was arrested in Waco after police said they saw a joint in his car ashtray. He had pulled off the road to sleep after an all night poker game.
- Earlier this year, citations were given to six of Nelson's band members after police smelled the aroma of marijuana in a North Carolina parking lot and found a quart jar three-quarters full of moonshine on the tour bus.
