Keeping Houston Quirky
Float the friendly skies at Discovery Green
Discovery Green is taking off to new heights—literally.
Starting December 11, the Administaff Holiday Balloon will be tethered at the park in downtown Houston, lifting riders 35 stories off the ground—that's 350 feet, high enough on a clear day, we hear, to see all the way to the Gulf.
After stints in New York, Boston and most recently at Chicago's Navy Pier, the balloon graces Space City until the end of February, 2010. The huge sphere is eco-friendly, since it is filled only once with helium during its three-month stay in Houston.
For a ride, acrophobes need not apply. The gondola holds up to 17 in a donut-shape with a space in the middle where brave souls can glance down. Rides last eight to 10 minutes and are available every day, weather permitting.
