Not quite a no-tears episode
Inside Brooklyn Decker's pink closet: The final secrets of Extreme Makeover:Home Edition's Houston build
Editor's note: CultureMap's Caroline Gallay has been reporting on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition's Houston build since day one and no reporter's gotten to know the Johnson family better. Caroline offers her final reflections as the family begins its new post-TV-show life.
The first-ever Houston episode of ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition wasn't quite the tear-free show Ty Pennington and company had promised.
Although there were lots of laughs from guest star comedians — including Cedric the Entertainer, who also entertained the couple on their first date — the family was in tears almost immediately when Ty surprised them at Houston's Improv Comedy Club to let them know they'd been chosen. They were happy tears, though, and then the family was off to Paris while their new house shot up in Houston's Third Ward.
We've seen the new house and met the family, but it wasn't until their episode aired that we got a good luck at the old place. Eric and Elaine Johnson had given us dimensions and described the damage incurred during Hurricane Ike, but it wasn't until Ty crumbled termite-rotted wood from the foundation in his hands that we realized how truly bad it was, and the safety concerns the Johnsons must have had.
The family had been eating off of paper plates because their cabinetry couldn't support ceramics. A lock on the front door was low on their repair list, and Eric had devised an alternate system. When the designers entered the house for the first time Ty observes, "wow, that's . . . a bungee chord."
Aside from the dire state of the original house, viewers got a deeper look into Eric and Elaine Johnson's non-profit counseling business. Couples whose marriages the Johnsons had improved spoke about the role the couple played in keeping community marriages together, and the couple told us about leading through example in a community with many single-parent households.
We learned that celebrity guest, supermodel and Mrs. Andy Roddick, Brooklyn Decker, was behind the two-story hot-pink closet we told you about, and watched as the family strutted down their own personal catwalk. The Johnson's five adorable girls were a clear show highlight, with the eldest, 14-year-old Angela, best articulating the family's reaction when she saw her Paris-themed bedroom for the first time:
"I'm gonna hug you, mannequin."
