THE IKEA CHALLENGE
Curate the CultureLounge: Vote now to decide the winning Houston artwork
CultureMap sent out a call for artists and boy, did you ever answer.
A stream of submissions came in, trying to fill the one remaining gap in the odd-sized room we're making over into a CultureLounge with furniture provided by IKEA — a big piece of artwork for the bare walls. There were more entries than we had any right to expect given how quickly we asked for a turnaround.
Some of the submissions came from established artists (one had her "representative" drop off a huge packet right at the deadline), others were from those who dabble in art while making their living in other fields, still more were from first timers or budding artists.
Many were stunningly good and cutting down the submissions to the five that you will vote on turned into a difficult process. CultureMap readers are exceedingly talented.
As expected, we didn't always agree. Caroline favored a Pop look with direct references to Houston icons. Conversely, Steven felt drawn to the more subtle, contemplative compositions.
Ultimately, we believe that our top five selections represent the five best potential artworks for the CultureLounge. From stirring abstract compositions and evocative brushwork, to stark digital lines and conceptual queries, this collection presents something for everyone. And of course, our top five entries correspond to our only requirement: That the artwork feature a touch of bright yellow.
There's a cool, altered illustration of the Astrodome from architect James Glassman, an abstract expressionism take for 2010 by Geraldina Interiano Wise, a striking catastrophic view of our office's warehouse district that features elements of a map from graphics designer Kristi Hughes, a lush oil painting from artist Hanh Tran and a very different look at Yellow from Cameron Blaylock.
Now, it's time to go vote for your favorite. It's one person, one vote through our system, but you can definitely champion, campaign and cajole for your favorite in the comments section of this story.
It is time for CultureMap readers to put the finishing touch on the CultureLounge. Everything else is in its place, now it's on you to make sure the best possible piece of artwork hangs on the wall.
Consider this a turning-point episode of Houston's own Work of Art. You have until Monday night at 10 — make the right choice. We'll have to live with it.
To vote click here to reach the Culture Poll or click on it on the far right-hand column of CultureMap.com, the new home for Culture Polls of all sorts.
Editor's note: Culture Polls are a new permanent feature on CultureMap. More and more, you'll have the ability to make a choice — whether it's to decide a winning artwork or chime in on an important (or silly) issue in the city.
