Elmo doesn't appreciate Katy Perry's cleavage, plus five celebs who made SesameStreet cool (with video)
It must be hard when even Elmo thinks you're a hot mess.
Katy Perry's appearance on Sesame Street, singing a modified version of "Hot and Cold" made the rounds this week — but it drew more attention for her cleavage than for her ditty about opposites and playing.
After some parental backlash, Sesame Street says the feature won't air on an episode of the show, but will remain available online. Frankly, we're not sad to see it go — not because of Perry's questionable fashion choice, but because of her overacting and the general lack of catchiness for the two-minute bit.
There are plenty of pitfalls in appearing on children's TV — too boring, too stiff, too weird, too gimmicky. Here's our picks for celebs that did it right:
1. Feist, "1, 2, 3, 4"
Here's a song that was made for Sesame Street-ification. Feist seems to have fun with her muppet costars, and the videography is a nod to the adults who love the original video. An instant classic.
2. Paul Rudd, "Earth Rocks!"
OK, it's not technically even a real song, but Rudd gets a million cool points for being willing to dress up as a giant globe. This could have been really cheesy, but Rudd is just too committed for it to do anything besides, well, rock.
Talk about a celebrity not dumbing down their act for small audiences. Gervais is his silly, catty self before singing a lullaby to Elmo. If there's any doubt that Gervais was letting loose on the set, the viral behind-the-scenes interview with Elmo says it all.
Generally the bits where celebs come on to talk about words are a little flat. But Gyllenhaal, working with an octopus on his head, turns in his best performance since Jarhead, looking beyond adorable all the while.
5. Sheryl Crow "I Wanna Soak Up The Soak"
Watching this clip, it's easy to remember that before her record deal, Crow was a teacher. This is basically just a music circle, with monsters and the occasional dancing iguana.
And finally, here's Katy Perry's too-sexy-for-Sesame-Street video:
