Do the Rockets have a chance to snag Carmelo Anthony?
LeBron who?
Even though decision time is months away, the Web is buzzing with rumors on where Denver Nuggets basketball star Carmelo Anthony is headed.
Anthony, who goes by the nickname Melo, has reportedly turned down a three-year, $65 million contract extension with Denver and will become a free agent next summer.
Most bets are on the New York Knicks. Anthony was born in Brooklyn and went to Syracuse in upstate New York. Bleacher Report cites a source who says Isiah Thomas has said Anthony told him he intends to sign with the Knicks. (Nothing like a friend of a friend of a friend as a credible source.)
More credible: Anthony's wife, former MTV VJ LaLa Vasquez, told the New York Daily News, “Us being in New York is a possibility." (Vasquez is also a Brooklyn native.)
Bleacher Report puts the Houston Rockets in a group of 10 clubs that could land Anthony. But the prospects don't sound very promising, writes columnist Bobby Carringer.
Houston does not have the free money to outright sign Anthony, so they would have to work out a sign-and-trade. If Houston were to trade for Anthony, they would likely have to give up a key piece such as Aaron Brooks, so it will be a real question of just how good would the Rockets be if they had to let go of two or three potentially very good basketball players just to get Carmelo.
Sounds like we're better off praying that Yao Ming's foot heals.
