Editors Note: We've asked Houston arts leaders and CultureMap contributors to pick the jewels from Houston's upcoming arts season — the events that they don't plan to miss. Here's what's on Alley Theatre artistic director Gregory Boyd's list:
1. Houston Grand Opera'sMadame Butterfly (Oct. 22-Nov. 5). I’m very much looking forward to Michael Grandage making his directorial debut here. Michael won the Tony for his direction of Red last season on Broadway — and is simply one of the most interesting theatre directors around.
2. Catastrophic Theatre’sBluefinger (Nov. 12-Dec. 18): based on the Black Francis album, and this ambitious company’s biggest work yet.
3. Inprint’s Reading Series’ evening with Salman Rushdie (Dec. 3): It is always thrilling to hear him.
4. Lady Gaga was fantastic at the Toyota Center last month, and she’s back in Houston in April.
5. It’s hard to resist mentioning the Alley’s Peter Pan (Oct. 1-31) since it is such a rare opportunity to see the original work by J.M. Barrie and not the (however well-loved) Disney-fied or musicalized versions that don’t have the depth and heartbreak of the real thing.
And from Neverland to Wonderland, I know many Houstonians will travel to New York to see the Alley’s Wonderland on Broadway next spring.
