Friday night at House of Blues
Girl power: Why I love Chelsea Handler and can't wait to see the Comedians of Chelsea Lately Tour
Every weeknight, as 10 o'clock comes around, I run and jump on the couch and turn on the E! channel. Right before I go to sleep I have to get my fix of Chelsea Lately. I cuddle with a blanket and laugh hysterically at Chelsea Handler's sassy and sarcastic comments.
My addiction to the show started out in high school about four years ago as I was flipping through channels one night and discovered Chelsea. As I kept watching, I sat transfixed because I wanted to comprehend why I found it so appealing.
Having a women host telling inappropriate jokes and asking questions no one dared to ask make Chelsea Lately different from your standard late night shows.
And then it clicked. What Chelsea Lately has that other late night talk shows don't — amid the celebrity gossip, pop culture and celebrity interiews — is a woman host and multiple comedians poking fun at one another.
I started to realize this show was directed towards young adult women and that's why I love it. Having a women host telling inappropriate jokes and asking questions no one dared to ask make this show different from your standard late night shows.
Now that I am in college, I still enjoy the show just as much as I did when I first started watching. My roommates love it as much as I do. We all crowd around our TV downstairs with a glass of wine when Chelsea Lately is on.
My sick obsession has grown with the show, After Lately, a mockumentary behind-the-scenes look at Chelsea Lately that comes on Friday nights after Handler's show (the new season starts in September). After Lately features a round table of comedians, who also comprise the writing staff for the two shows. Handler plays the part of the only "bright one" in the office. This show is great fun to watch because we get to see the comedians' off-camera personalities.
Since this show has become such a huge hit, the comedians have started a tour on their own called — surprise! — the Comedians of Chelsea Lately Tour. As I was looking on the House of Blues website recently, I was thrilled to discover that three of the comedians — Josh Wolf, Jen Kirkman and Brad Wollack —will be in Houston Friday night to perform.
My dream has come true — I'm finally going to get the chance to see them live. I plan to go with my mother. She's a fan, too.
