Blame it on Bono
Lee DeWyze at a disadvantage heading into American Idol's Simon goodbye show
Last week I predicted Lee DeWyze would be the winner of American Idol, but heading into tonight's results show, I’m not so sure. The finale is supposed to be a contestant’s best performance but Lee was sadly overcome with stage fright and poor song selection on the voting performances Tuesday night.
The producers chose "Beautiful Day" as Lee's final piece and it did not do U2 proud.
First of all, when you take a U2 classic and splice it down to roughly two and a half minutes — there’s going to be problems. "Beautiful Day" won its way into our hearts because of its dramatic build and cutting its length makes it hard for an artist to capture this.
Further hurting the song’s climax, Lee’s version chopped off the vocal range from the original. Bono starts an octave lower than Lee for the first verse and then jumps the octave for the second. Lee started high, taking away from potential build up in an already shortened song.
The tempo and melody in the chorus were also changed, elongating the lyrics “It was a beautiful day” and “Touch me.” I found myself wanting the original and that's not the response Lee needed last night.
Crystal Bowersox’s performance was fantastic; she did everything she needed to do. I’m not sold she’s going to win, because Lee has a fanatical female following (voting bloc), but either way, Bowersox's established herself as an artist.
I'm a fan of both finalists and let's be honest, making it to the top two guarantees at least a shot at a record deal. Whatever the outcome, their American Idol afterlife is more important than this win and I hope they're both able to land a few hits and continue the path they've started.
Of course, everyone will probably be talking more about Simon Cowell's goodbye (tonight is it, with Paula Abdul returning to pay tribute) than whoever wins anyways.
