A Hot Ticket
Marilyn Monroe heats up historic movie house: Second Majestic Metro showingexpected to sell out
When the Alamo Drafthouse Rolling Roadshow and the Downtown District announced that they would bring back classic films to the old Majestic Metro movie theater downtown, Houston rejoiced. When tickets for a screening of Breakfast at Tiffany's on Valentine's Day at Majestic were released, they sold out like hot cakes.
Now sales have begun for Some Like It Hot, set for 7:30 p.m. June 5 at Majestic. It's a good bet to expect this gangster, cross-dressing farce starring Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis to be just as popular — especially in the splendor of the 1926 movie house, one of the few standing historic nickelodeons in the greater Houston area.
Restored by developer Gary Warwick, it took five years to bring the Majestic Metro back from the dead (watch CultureMap's exclusive video of the restoration again above). Demolition may have been the theater's fate at one point, but it wasn't meant to "get the fuzzy end of the lollipop."
Although the venue is mostly used for private events, this second public film screening is part of an effort to bring more life back into downtown after dark.
Prior to the screening, movie buffs can cool off with complimentary sno-cones and Italian ices from Sweet Ride food truck and summer cocktails from Dripping Springs Vodka. Better yet, make it a dinner-and-a-movie night and check out one of these local restaurants.
Big Movie Classics at the Majestic Metro screens Some Like it Hot on June 5 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online. Note: Tickets cannot be purchased at the door.
