Fey's funnier & forgotten
Betty White bleeps some energy — and MacGruber tongue —into Saturday Night Live
Admit it — you wanted to see Betty White host Saturday Night Live so you could hear the 88-year-old get bleeped for dropping an F-bomb.
While Betty and SNL delivered tonight in a sketch where MacGruber asks White, playing his grandmother, to marry him. "Are you out of your fucking mind?" White shoots back in a bleep, while the audience roars. "Yes."
White and MacGruber follow this by sealing their union with a kiss, which is mostly forgotten because Betty White ... swore! And this is how the most anticipated Saturday Night Live in at least a decade goes. Tonight's entire show hinged on the notion of seeing just how saucy and naughty America's favorite octogenarian could get (within the confines of network TV).
It's all very silly. It was essentially the same joke reworked over and over again for 90 minutes. And somehow, it worked. Because Betty White apparently is really that awesome.
For one night, she lifted the entire energy of Lorne Michael's gasping franchise. Betty White seems younger than SNL. She certainly worked harder than any SNL host in years, appearing in a whopping 12 segments at "88-and-a-half."
She bit the keyboard fingers of those who stroked her into this position, mocking the Facebook drive that gave Michaels no choice but to give her a hosting gig, by cracking, "I must say, (Facebook) sounds like a huge waste of time. I would never say the people on it are losers, but that's only because I'm polite."
She managed to make the skit with Tina Fey — the one that everyone in America was looking forward to — work despite the fact that the SNL's writers seemed to try and sabotage it with the lamest of census setups. Sure, there were some skits where White's only role was to repeat, "lesbian" over and over again (just one of the unfunny gay jokes that appeared recycled from the days when the Golden Girls was on the air).
And if we want to be truthful, Fey's return to Weekend Update on this rare women power Saturday Night Live was funnier than anything Betty did.
Still, you know who ended up getting the shout out from Jay-Z ....
It is Betty White's world and you're just living in it.
Now, if White could only somehow find a way to kill MacGruber before that horrific spinoff movie is released.
