Bracket Town takes basketball fans from spectator to star
There's been more than a little handwringing of late over the younger generation's technological addiction.
Kids play Madden instead of throwing around the football and watch Lebron on SportsCenter instead of working on their jump shot. When it comes to actual action, the only things getting a workout are our thumbs.
Luckily, through Monday, Houston residents and visitors can get their sport on at Bracket Town, the enormous Final Four interactive experience at the George R. Brown Convention Center.
After passing through a cocoon of black curtains and Final Four memories, the Bracket Town space emerges large and ready to bring out your inner baller. There are hoops and courts of every possible shape and size, with kids, teens and adults shooting around and playing one-on one.
There are arcade-style shooting games and smaller courts for kids of all ages — I saw a toddler barely bigger than a basketball delighted by walking around a court, occasionally lifting the ball over his head to emulate the older kids shooting nearby.
While most of Bracket Town is basketball, basketball and more basketball, (including a kid's camp and autographs with famous players — check out the schedule here) some of the best games are from across the sports spectrum in the central area sponsored by Capital One.
Participants can go through a football training course, aim three spiral passes, take hockey slapshots into a net and take home run swings at wiffle balls with plastic bats (it sounds a little silly but the kids I saw were taking it very seriously).
Lacrosse, golf, ping-pong, you name it — if it's a sport it's here and you can play it.
And while most exhibits were focused on physical interaction, there is an area sponsored by EA Sports, who make some of the most popular sports videogames. They had game systems set up and ready to play, but the area was oddly quiet in comparison to the rest of the Bracket Town experience.
Sorry, technology. It looks like real play isn't throwing in the towel just yet.
