Where's the Pontiff?
Pope Benedict no-shows Houston musicians in Mexico: No explanation given formissing requested concert
Tuned, decked out in formal garb and primed for a performance of the highest order, Houston musicians were set to entertain Pope Benedict XVI during his first visit to Mexico.
The concert was organized for the papal cortège while on tour in Leon Saturday morning. Except the music-loving pontiff didn't show and officials didn't provide a reason for his absence.
(The artists shouldn't feel too bad. The pope didn't attend a White House dinner celebrating his 81st birthday hosted by President Bush in 2008, either.)
A few weeks prior, ensembles scheduled to be in the area were made aware of the opportunity, and Bach Society Houston's Bach Choir alongside Camerata Ventapane, a period instrument ensemble led by Houston Grand Opera's and Houston Ballet Orchestra's principal cellist Barrett Sills with guest conductor Matthew Dirst, were chosen by the pope's delegation for the honor.

The performance went on without the pope, including selections from Vivaldi's Magnificatand Bach's cantatas with soprano Melissa Givens, mezzo-soprano Cecilia Duarte, tenor Randall Umstead, bass Paul Max Tipton, tenor Zachary Wilder and baritone Paul Busselberg.
The musicians were south-of-the-border for a series of gigs, recitals, lectures and social gatherings as part of the Festival de Música Barroca de San Miguel de Allende.
In Houston, Bach Society Houston will perform on April 1 and 6 at Christ the King Lutheran Church. On the program is Bach's St. John Passion. Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, archbishop of Galeveston-Houston, is an invited guest of Lutheran Bishop Michael Rinehart.
Tell us in the comments: Are you curious to attend a pope-worthy local show? What other groups would you be proud to have represent Houston in front of the Holy Father?
UPDATE: Musicians were told that the Pope did not attend because of the combined effects of jet lag, altitude and heat.
