Till the reunion tour
The unanswered question of Brooks & Dunn
Now that Brooks & Dunn have played their 19th consecutive and final RodeoHouston performance, the question that has been sitting on the tongues of country music fans for the better part of two decades can finally be asked.
What, exactly, is the deal with Ronnie Dunn's high-ridin' hair?
Just kidding. A little levity is needed as we watch one of the most successful partnerships in the country music history metaphorically ride into the sunset. Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn have already announced that, following this current U.S. tour, the duo will part ways to pursue other musical interests.
Their 16-song rodeo set served as a career-spanning sampler of the 50 singles (including 26 No. 1s) that will be their legacy. The night moved from the new country violin waltz, "Cowgirls Don't Cry," to The Eagles-inspired lite-rock of last year's "Honky Tonk Stomp" with stops at just about every one of their 10 studio albums along the way.
Even more than the music, however, RodeoHouston is losing one of its greatest supporters.
Where Kenny Chesney would rather be at the beach and Toby Keith would rather be driving cross country in a Ford truck (or at least filming a commercial where he pretends to drive a Ford cross country), Brooks & Dunn are rodeo fans. Kix Brooks co-wrote the ballad "The Last Rodeo," as a tribute to the tense bond between bull rider and bull. Other songs like "Put A Girl In It," and the patriotic "Only In America," seem to be written with RodeoHouston and spring break in mind.
Rather than overanalyze the show, I thought I would offer longtime Brooks & Dunn fans a setlist souvenir as a parting gift. Clip n' save this in your scrapbook or add it to the social network or digital time capsule of choice.
See ya, Kix. Later, Ronnie.
I can't wait for the reunion tour (I give it five years max before that happens).
