Sultry Solange wows hometown crowd at sold-out concert; reveals next music video in Houston
Can you imagine looking up to Beyoncé as an older sister? A larger-than-life personality with a superstar husband, multimillion dollar contracts and a life in the constant spotlight?
Solange Knowles has repeatedly insisted that life isn't for her and she proved it at a hometown show at Fitzgerald's on Tuesday night, taking the stage after Afro-futurist funk band Sinkane warmed up the crowd.
Solange's soulful hip sways served her well, in a Martha Reeves or Donna Summer sort of way.
There were none of the over-the-top-sexy costumes we can expect during Queen Bey's Toyota Center performance in July — although the audience got a gratuitous peek of her gams in a '70s-inspired ensemble from favored Paris label Kenzo. Nothing close to the elaborately choreographed dance moves that Beyoncé has trademarked, but Solange's soulful hip sways served her well, in a Martha Reeves or Donna Summer sort of way.
And even if previous albums Solo Star and Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams haven't exactly reach platinum status, the well-dressed crowd in the sold-out venue sang along with every word — including "I Could Fall In Love With You," a tribute to Selena — as well as "Look Good With Trouble" and "Don't Let Me Down," tracks from True, the EP she released last November.
Whereas Solange drew upon the sights of South Africa for the music video that accompanied the danceable "Losing You," she told the audience that she will be filming for her next single at a quintessentially Houston locale: King's Flea Market.
Solange and her band move on to Austin for SXSW shows at Fader Fort, Spin and Hype Machine, and will take a break before a summer full of music festivals.
