Just say "YES" to a Trey Speegle print on 20x200.com
Houston native and New York media savant-cum-fine artist Trey Speegle is the star du jour on the populist Internet art shop, 20x200. His print, "YES (You Complete the Picture)," claims the current homepage, offering shoppers first dibs on the edition of 200 8-by-10 inch prints, at $20 each.
The image, derived from a vintage paint by number of the Arc de Triomphe, originally appeared as the backdrop to the spring 2010 runway show of designer Stella McCartney. Speegle wrote in a diary of the experience for CultureMap: "She said her inspiration for the collection was optimism and the fabrics were atypically colorful for her. In fact, the palette of the painting and collection were nearly identical."
Superimposed on the work's vibrant Paris street scene is the word, "YES," suggesting a variety of interpretations: The word may refer to the political triumph the original architecture represented, the confidence of McCartney's collection, or if an observer were to carefully connect the dots, it could be paying homage to Yoko Ono and the Lennon-Paul McCartney connection.
"I love Yoko," Speegle has said of the conceptual artist, famous for her original "Yes" piece. "Nobody along the catwalk spoke of the Yoko connection; it may have even gone unnoticed."
In a previous CultureMap interview, Speegle said his work isn't necessarily just about paint-by-number.
I'm re-contextualizing it and also using it as a jumping off point. Instead of being about paint-by-number, for me, it's about making art and making your life interesting. Paint-by-number is where banal and profound meet. Like the word 'Yes' that I did for Stella — unless you do something specific with the word, it's as banal as it gets."
The deal on 20x200.com, in which "YES" may be acquired for a mere two Andrew Jacksons, is certainly catching the attention of online art buyers. Speegle fans will have to act fast to snag one of the 200 copies. Other editions are available in different sizes and prices, ranging from $50 to $2,000.
