Mystery Killer Illness
Unexplained horror: Mysterious illness kills 50 percent of people it infects in Houston area
Montgomery County health officials report that four of eight people have died from complications stemming from a mysterious flu-like illness.
KHOU Ch. 11 reports that the patients — ranging in age from 41 to 68 — recently checked into area hospitals with symptoms similar to flu or pneumonia. Tests for influenza, however, have all returned negative results.
Sources say that two surviving patients at Conroe Regional Medical Center are "very sick," as doctors await more conclusive test results in the coming days. In the meantime, county health professionals are taking extra precaution to prevent any possible spreading of the mystery illness.
The illness also appears to be causing kidney failure, although it remains unclear if patients arrived at hospitals with pre-existing conditions.
