A bomb on his doorstep: City councilman links stunning death threats to hispolitics
Houston city councilman Al Hoang woke Tuesday morning to discover what authorities suggest was an unlit Molotov cocktail sitting on the doorstep of his District F home.
The improvised incendiary device — which a representative from the Houston Police Department described as a “Clorox bleach bottle filled with a potentially flammable liquid” — was quickly removed by bomb squad agents and send to the Houston Fire Department where it is undergoing analysis. A threatening note was found at the scene.
The incident occurred just days after Hoang contacted HPD about a protest staged in front of his house.
While investigators have encouraged him to offer few details about the threats, Hoang said he believes he knows who is behind the activity.
“The councilman reported about 12 to 15 protestors on Saturday, including one with a blowhorn,” HPD spokesperson John Cannon tells CultureMap. “He told police they were in disagreement with his politics.”
Hoang explains that before the protest the man with the megaphone, who the councilman knows, waved a gun in the air and shouted “I kill you and your family” in Vietnamese.
While investigators have encouraged him to offer few details about the threats, Hoang told KHOU Channel 11 he believes he knows who is behind the activity. He has not revealed any names, although the KHOU report suggests the culprit could be a former political rival.
“The [Saturday] incident occurred when the mayor and I welcomed the vice minister of Vietnam,” he said, noting that they were trying to promote trade and direct flights between Houston and Vietnam.
Hoang — who was raised in South Vietnam before relocating to the United States after the 1975 fall of Saigon — told reporters that the man who threatened him this weekend is violently opposed to the Vietnamese communist regime and doesn't want the city councilman to encourage business relations with the current government. No arrests have been made.
