Hair today, governor tomorrow?
Houston hair care magnate announces bid for Governor
Is it the end of the Texas bouffant?
While much of the attention on the governor's race is focused on the increasingly nasty fight between Gov. Rick Perry and Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson, the race on the Democratic side got hairier as Farouk Shami, the maker of the revered CHI hair straightening system, threw his hat in the ring Thursday afternoon.
Farouk moved his production headquarters from Korea to Houston in July and vowed to continue creating jobs in Texas. Among his campaign promises were a pledge to spend $10 million of his own money on the campaign (with plans to raise another $10 mil), and to take a gubernatiorial salary of only $1 per year.
Shami joins businessman (and brother of Bob) Tom Schieffer, schoolteacher Felix Alvarado, rancher Hank Gilbert and my beloved Kinky Friedman in the Democratic race. (Side note: my freshman dorm room featured a poster of the quirky Austinite signed "with love from the gov," a treasured possession).
The primary election for both political parties is March 2, 2010.
