Marine Hero Father
The sad truth behind Sam Champion's Houston visit: His dad dies at M.D. Anderson
It was a question raised by many a commenter following Good Morning America weatherman Sam Champion's surprise TV appearance in Houston Friday morning. Lacking a major news story or special event, what brought Champion to Houston to broadcast his regular weather reports from Discovery Green?
The answer is sadder than expected. Sam Champion's father, Lt. Col. James H. Champion, passed away Monday night at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
James Champion was a veteran of Marine Corps operations in the Dominican Republic, Scotland and Vietnam. He was a rifle company commander during the Tet Offensive and he won two Bronze Stars. James Champion eventually settled in Houston with his wife of 53 years, Cindy.
"Sam tells me his tight knit military family is strong and hanging together to face their time of grief," GMA senior executive producer Jim Murphy wrote in an e-mail to the show's staff. " Please give your thoughts and prayers to Sam and his family."
The Champion family has set up a memoriam fund at M.D. Anderson and are requesting that GMA fans (or anyone else) who wants to send flowers, donate to the hospital or the Virginia Autism Project instead. Champion's older sister Teresa has a son who suffers from autism and she has become a crusader for a cure.
