New details emerge about tragic Montrose shooting after alleged argument overloud music
New details have emerged regarding the tragic death of Benjamin Becke, a 30-year-old man who was shot early Sunday morning during an alleged argument over loud music at a Montrose apartment building on Dunlavy.
On Tuesday, Houston Police Department spokesperson Kese Smith told CultureMap that Becke was a visitor — not a tenant, as previously thought — at the building where the incident occurred. A resident of Huffman in northeast Harris County, the victim was in town celebrating his birthday, according to police.
In an HPD statement released Monday, homicide officers John Villareal and J. Horn reported that Becke was found dead at the scene around 2 a.m. on Sunday after suffering a gunshot wound to the chest. The shooter, referred to as "a neighbor" in the statement, was taken into custody for questioning and subsequently released without charges.
The case has been referred to a grand jury and, until a decision is made whether to go to trial, no further information about the shooting is expected to be released. Little is known of the suspect, whose name has not been released.
Few details have surfaced about Becke, as well, although Harris County records show he was married in November 2000. CultureMap has reached out to extended family, but has not received a response.
