It's a joke, I swear
More plane, more problems: Mitt Romney's wife insists he's not dense, just panicprone
Last week it was secret video footage revealing Mitt Romney's disparaging remarks about 47 percent of Americans. This week, the GOP presidential hopeful is dealing with the fallout of a joke that never took off.
At a California fundraiser over the weekend, Romney recounted the recent emergency landing of a plane carrying Ann Romney after the cabin filled with smoke.
"When you have a fire in an aircraft, there's no place to go, exactly, there's no — and you can’t find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don't open," Romney told the crowd at the fundraiser. "I don't know why they don't do that. It's a real problem."
Though it may not have been immediately apparent that Romney's statement was in jest, the pool reporter has since clarified that he was joking, though not before a barrage of Twitter quips about Romney plane features.
As evidenced by the video below, the punch line falls pretty flat with the 1,500-person audience at the fundraiser. (Also, does anyone else find it weird that Romney speaks about Ann like she's not standing right next to him?)
"It's his way of making light of how worried he is about me," Ann told Jay Leno on Tuesday night. "It's his way of dealing with the panic of knowing how dangerous this was."
