Head of the Class
There's nothing typical about this extraordinary Houston school
Finding the right educational pathway for your child can sometimes be a challenge, because every student is different. Whether they’re extremely academically gifted, take a little more time to absorb new material, or are so talented outside the classroom in athletics or the arts that they don’t have time for a traditional schedule, Fusion Academy has a solution that will work for you and your family.
Fusion is an accredited private middle and high school for grades 6-12 that specializes in a one-to-one learning experience. There are nearly 40 campuses across the country, with seven in Texas alone. Each classroom has one student and one teacher, and students and families can create the schedule that works best for them, as class times range from 7:30 am-7:30 pm.
"The beauty of that one-to-one experience is that we get to meet students where they’re at and see how their interests unfold," says Elizabeth Beguerie, Head of School at Fusion Houston Galleria. "Then we go from here and just mentor and cultivate a love of learning and curiosity."
For example, Beguerie shares about a student at Fusion’s Houston campus who is dyslexic and has trouble learning foreign languages. The solution? That student is studying American Sign Language. There are currently 50 students at the Houston locations, and students can enroll in three different tracks. A student can attend Fusion full-time, take a class or two for credit, or sign up for tutoring and mentoring.
But the really attractive aspects for the students (and the parents) is that homework cannot leave the campus.
"We really felt strongly that our students didn’t need an additional two to three hours of homework at home when they’ve already had an intense experience on campus," Beguerie says. "For our students, that is a main source of stress and anxiety — not only for themselves but also within the family unit."
Fusion does give students some independent study projects, and those are worked on in the Homework Cafe alongside other students. This environment encourages interaction and socialization with their peers, as well as a chance to practice what they’ve learned in the classroom. There is also a Homework Cafe Director available for any questions.
But it's not all classwork, all the time. Fusion hosts a prom and a graduation ceremony, and once a month on Fridays the students and teachers will go on field trips or do community service projects. There are also student-directed clubs on campus, such as a photography club and a video gaming club.
"We also bring in professional speakers for our students," Beguerie says, noting that they host “lunch and learns" where experts come in and speak about a range of topics.
Interested in visiting the campus? Make sure you stop by the state-of-the-art recording studio or the yoga and meditation room on your visit. Students can enroll at any time — call 713-963-9096 or visit the academy's website to find out more. Fusion Houston Galleria is hosting an open house on September 21, so make sure to check it out if you think Fusion might be the right choice for your family.
