Sitting on a tinderbox
Burning Bush: Large wildfire in West Houston creates a scary scene, firefightersscrambling
UPDATE: The Houston Fire Department continued to battle the large wildfire in George Bush Park overnight, having upped its manpower in the fight to 175 firefighters, 50 pieces of fire equipment and four bulldozers. They are determined to make sure that no one has to evacuate their home.

Houston's been described as a tinderbox that could ignite at any time in this wildfire summer of 2011 and it's happening in George Bush Park now. A huge grass fire is raging in the park and Houston firefighters are trying to get it under control.
The exclusive helicopter video from KTRK Ch. 13 (see below) shows a scary scene with the fire already raging across a large section of the park and huge clouds of smoke lifting into the air. A HPD spokesperson reports that the fire appears to have started near the road on the 16700 block of Westheimer Parkway. It's rapidly moving now, pushed by the wind as it goes through the brittle, dry grass of the park.
HPD already has 22 pieces of equipment and 60 firefighters on the scene. CyFair, West I-10 and Community Volunteer Fire Departments have also responded.
A CultureMap staffer reports that the smoke from the fire is visible from the West U/Galleria areas.
Trees for Houston executive director Barry Ward told CultureMap back on Sept. 1 that the city was in very real danger of seeing a massive wildfire. This George Bush Park fire has been going since after 3 p.m. now with little sign of slowing down. Twitter's abuzz with worry that the fire could end up jumping Highway 6.
KTRK reports that the smoke from the fire is also already blowing toward I-10, creating traffic visibility worries.
