Just Follow Your Nose
Huge pot bust by Dynamo's stadium brought on by an intense EaDo smell: Acriminal oops
The warehouses of EaDo got a surprise visit from Harris County authorities last week after police followed their noses to a hidden stash of marijuana with an estimated street value of $250,000.
It all started with one deputy constable's search for a stolen car near the intersection of Lamar and Palmer, just blocks from the new BBVA Compass Stadium, home to Major League Soccer's Houston Dynamo.
Police sawed their way through the garage door entrance to find more than 300 marijuana plants growing as high as five feet tall.
The officer picked up an incriminating scent leading to an unsuspecting metal building just feet from the Columbia Tap Rail-Trail, a popular bike path that cuts through the light industrial neighborhood. A K-9 unit was called and a search warrant was obtained.
By midnight, police sawed their way through the garage door entrance to find more than 300 marijuana plants growing as high as five feet tall.
A lone tenant farmer, 30-year-old Daniel Pope, surrendered after trying to flee the scene. For the moment, the suspect has been charged with possession, but a statement from Harris County Constable Precinct 6 says that charges may be upgraded as the investigations continues.
Amidst Pope's a humble domestic setup, which included a refrigerator and laundry facilities, officers seized a 40-caliber pistol and a stockpile of weed ready for distribution.
“We also found some packaged marijuana . . . about 30 five gallon packages,” Precint 6 lieutenant Julio Banda told KHOU. “Plus we found an additional 60 to 70 stored away in a refrigerator.”
In a News 92 report, Banda noted a relatively sophisticated indoor farm that included a clever reworking of plumbing and electricity to keep the building's excessive use of water and power under the radar.
