UPDATE: On Tuesday afternoon, Les Alexander upped his pledge to $10 million to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund.
Mayor Sylvester Turner's Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund has received a big donation. Houston Rockets owner Les Alexander has pledged $4 million to the charitable fund that was set up on Sunday after Turner said he received an "overwhelming" number of inquires from citizens and corporations about helping out.
The fund is administered by the Greater Houston Community Foundation.
"Our hearts are heavy seeing the devastation that so many of our friends, family and neighbors are experiencing," the Rockets said in a statement announcing the donation.
The team also posted the following tweet:
“We are getting calls from across the country and right here in our hometown, and the generosity of people who understand this disaster is truly amazing,” Turner said in a statement. “Together we can make a difference to those who will need extensive help to get back on their feet once this storm is over.”
Donations are tax deductible. Methods to donate to the fund include:
