A smarter suburb: University of Houston plans to expand its Sugar Land campus
Fort Bend County has not only the jobs, but also the education needed to land one. During a recent meeting, the University of Houston System Board of Regents unanimously approved an update to the campus plan of its Sugar Land outpost.
The current UH-Sugar Land campus, which is situated on the southwest corner of U.S. Highway 59 and University Boulevard, consists of two mixed-use buildings and (in a partnership with co-located Wharton County Junior College) offers the opportunity to complete more than 20 undergraduate degrees and more than 12 graduate degrees.
Expanded facilities would include a prospective theater/festival complex (yes, another one), occupying a 52-acre plot at the southwest corner of the 200-acre campus. That facility would "accommodate academic programs and host student performances and community events."
Another future addition would be the UH Center for Industrial Partnerships, housed in a state-of-the-art, 60,000 square foot academic facility that would host interactive media programs focused on digital media and gaming.
Before moving forward, the UH System must continue talks with the City of Sugar Land, and the project must win the approval of the Texas Legislature and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
