Crime Spree Hits Dog Parks
Upscale dog park becomes a thief's best friend: Crooks see dog distracted folks as easy targets
With its bone-shaped swimming ponds, agility courses and acres of running space, the Bill Archer Dog Park is a veritable pleasure garden for our four-legged Houstonians.
But thanks to a group of daring daytime burglars, the popular canine hangout near the intersection of I-10 and Beltway 6 has become a den of petty crime in recent weeks.
County investigators tell KHOU's Malini Basu that thieves are targeting unsuspecting humans as they entertain their animal companions in broad daylight. As recently as Saturday, a woman reported her car window getting smashed during a morning visit.
"You’re trying to enjoy a day at the park with your animal, and stuff like this happens."
"It’s unfortunate," says Richard Valdez, a regular at the Bill Archer facility with his lab-chow mix Eli. "You’re trying to enjoy a day at the park with your animal, and stuff like this happens."
Deputies with Harris County Precinct 5, which patrols the busy park, are keeping close tabs on suspicious activity.
Two male suspects in a car were stopped on Saturday afternoon and questioned in connection to the recent thefts. While CultureMap was unable to reach the precinct for details on the duo, deputies continue to urge dog park visitors to remain cautious until the culprits are apprehended.
