Forever fourth: Houston is one of the U.S.'s big four export powers
The rankings are in from the Brookings Institute on the nation's 100 biggest metropolitan areas for exports. In line with population rankings, Houston comes in at No. 4, generating $51.6 billion in exports in 2008, thanks in large part to the chemical industry.
New York City ranks highest, with exports of $85.16 billion, followed by Los Angeles and Chicago. All together, the nation's 100 biggest metropolitan areas generated total exports of more than $1 trillion in 2008, according to the Brookings report, with the top four cities of New York, LA, Chicago and Houston accounting for nearly 65 percent of that total.
Houston may have been surpassed by the airline-usurping Windy City, but we still came in $7 billion over the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Moreover, for 14 consecutive years, Houston has ranked first in the United States in foreign waterborne tonnage, first in imports and second in total tonnage for 19 consecutive years.
When evaluating the statistics, it's important not to confuse importing and exporting, as we learned from Art Vandelay in a very educational episode of Seinfeld.
