Tweetup fever catching on: #TweetsForBeats brings hugs to sick kids
Mark your calendars for July 12, when Beaver's Ice House will open its doors for a particularly righteous tweetup. While tweeting "#TweetForBeats," guests will decorate Texas-shaped Heart Hug pillow boxes.
These heart-warming objects are in turn granted to children following heart surgery to provide much-needed comfort.
The project is an extension of Texas Children's Hospital Heart Hugs initiative, which offers volunteers the chance to create a unique pillow and Texas-shaped pillow box.
"This is the first time we've done anything like this," Shelly White Millwee, director of communications for the American Heart Association Houston Division, tells CultureMap. "I know that Houston's such a great market for social media and we have a lot of excited folks. When our national office posed the question of coming up with an innovative way to foster collaboration between fundraising and health strategies, we came up with the tweetup."
The ever-active Beaver's aligned itself to the cause, and will be providing healthy fare (think tofu snacks, salads and pork sliders) alongside happy hour drinks. "They really tailored the menu around our needs," White Millwee says. A $10 suggested donation covers the cost of pillow materials.
Nifty door prizes, such as CPR kits and exclusive #TweetForBeats T-shirts, await the most eager of tweeters. Says the tweet-happy White Millwee, "We're the only chapter in our Southwest affiliate to try something like this, so I hope this sets the standard."
Here's hoping the cocktails-meets-crafting event becomes an annual tradition.
The tweetup will be held from 6 to 8 p.m next Tuesday. For more information, visit tweetsforbeats.eventbrite.com.
