Green Action Power
Houston beats Dallas in environmental progress rankings, places 16th in U.S.
Houston ranks 16th among "environmentally progressive" cities in the most populous metros in the United States and Canada.
The study by the Economist Intelligence Unit — which was first reported on by the Houston Business Journal — compared 27 major U.S. and Canadian cities’ environmental performance and policies.
In the subcategories, Houston appeared to fare slightly better than the overall ranking would indicate. The city’s environmental governance ranked fifth because of its green action plan and Houston was also ranked ninth in the buildings category. The city did not do as well in the waste category, and only reached the 10th spot (15 percent of waste in Houston is recycled, as opposed to the national average of 26 percent).
Overall, Houston has much to improve on in terms of its "environmental progressiveness," but, never fear, H-Town is still the highest ranked metro in the state. Dallas came in 17th and no other Texas cities were listed.
The most "environmentally progressive" city in the U.S. and Canada? San Francisco.
