Houston emerges as the No. 1 city in America for retail job growth, Dallas ranksa pitiful 85th
Despite failing to make the cut for the best cities for summer jobs, Houston ranks No. 1 in retail job growth (which measures retail jobs added in the last three years) according to a study of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Bored and broke college kids could soon be storming the Galleria after hearing that the area gained 4,100 retail jobs between 2008 and 2011.
While this is a small percentage gain — only about 1.5 percent, to be exact — Houston is one of the lucky few, as first reported in the Houston Business Journal.
Austin took the number two spot, with 2,400 jobs added, but after the two Texas leaders only six other cities in the entire country recorded positive growth in the retail market
The lucky six are Buffalo, Lancaster, Penn., Oklahoma City, Okla., Providence, R.I., Springfield, Mass., and Worcester, Mass.
Other Texas cities did not fare as well. El Paso came in the 10th spot with a loss of 200 jobs, San Antonio came in 69th with a loss of 4,400 jobs, and Dallas-Fort Worth ranked 85th out of 100 with 9,300 retail jobs lost.
The biggest loser? Los Angeles, which lost a staggering 53,700 retail jobs in the last three years, amounting to nearly 10 percent of the market.
Hopefully the increase in retail jobs will help Houston defend its title as America's best shopping city.
