Hot serve: Venus Williams' racy lacey number the talk of France
Well, it seems I can never complain about uncomfortable lingerie again, since Venus Williams plays tennis in the stuff.
Always one for firsts, (Venus long argued that women should receive equal prize money at Wimbledon, wrote an editorial in The Times that changed minds, got then-Prime Minister Tony Blair involved and when the measure was finally pushed through, she won the first Wimbledon with equal prize money), Venus said she wanted to see lace's foray onto the clay of Roland Garros.
She's been wearing a lacey black outfit with red piping and a stocking body cover at the French Open.
“It’s really about the illusion,” Venus told reporters. “Like, you can wear lace, but what’s the point of wearing lace when there’s just black under? The illusion of just having bare skin is definitely, for me, a lot more beautiful.”
She has her own fashion line, EleVen, and has long been famous for her on-court fashions. This is likely the first time an NFL owner has been seen in a corset (at least in public), though. Venus and her sister Serena own a stake in the Miami Dolphins.
After an early-round win, Venus received just one question about the match and eight straight about her outfit.
It doesn't bother me one bit though. Venus is the No. 2 player in the world (second only to her sister), so I think she can do whatever the hell she wants. In fact, let's encourage it.
Maybe an ice-dancing inspired athletic line with Johnny Weir?
