Midtown goes green with renovation of three parks — foodie kiosk and dog runs included
Development is booming in Midtown and green space is growing to match: Houston Midtown Rocks, a blog from the Midtown Management District devoted to neighborhood happenings, wrote about in-progress park projects on Monday, pointing to three area parks currently receiving facelifts thanks to collaboration between the Midtown Redevelopment Authority and the City of Houston Parks and Recreation Department.
Young professionals playing tipsy kickball on the greens of Baldwin Park likely know little of its riveting history, one that involves moneyed socialites, double-dealing and attempted murder. The historic 4.88-acre park at 1701 Elgin is getting upgrades to its lighting, jogging trails, playground equipment and entry landscaping, and Midtown Houston expects it to be finished "within the next 130 days or so."
On the same timetable and just a couple of blocks west is Elizabeth Glover Park, a .29-acre plot located at the intersection of Elgin and Austin. Glover is currently closed for improvements including a dog run, lawn space, seating, an exercise platform and cultural exhibits.
Occupying the corner of West Gray and Bagby Street on a spot owned by the management district, Midtown Park is also closed for improvements, which include a performance space, a new water feature, a dog run and a food kiosk that will be open for lunch and dinner.
"We're trying to get a vendor that will have appeal for the community," Cynthia Alvarado, managing director at the Houston Midtown Management District, told CultureMap. "Our goal is to put programming in the park that will create a real synergy in Midtown."
Part of that synergy, she explained, comes from the Bagby Street redevelopment currently underway as the first Greenroads project in the state.
