The Cleanest City Surprises
Keeping it pretty: A Houston suburb is named the cleanest city in America
Sugar Land's rising crime rate could in time bump it from its ranking as the second safest city in Texas, but at least the Houston suburb is keeping its skeletons in the closet by looking mighty pretty and presentable. Because that's what southern belles do.
A national network of nonprofits that advocates for clean, environmentally friendly and sustainable communities, lauded Sugar Land for its beautification efforts. Sugar Land received the highest possible standing and a number of awards from Keep America Beautiful. And now other states and cities are looking to Sugar Land to see how to improve their own neighborhoods.
Keep North Carolina Beautiful program director Brenda Ewadinger tells the Houston Chronicle she credits Sugar Land's accomplishment to a collaborative effort between businesses, government entities, schools, religious institutions, community groups and citizens. Vicki Gist, executive director of Keep Sugar Land Beautiful, shares the same viewpoint.
Recycling, road cleanup projects, green spaces, parks, waste reduction, tree care, nature appreciation, litter prevention and water conservation initiatives contribute to Keep Sugar Land Beautiful's mission. Since 2002, the local affiliate has earned the Sustained Excellence Award every year.
The Sugar Land Earth Day Celebration, which runs until 3 p.m. Saturday at Mercer Stadium and at Sugar Land Town Square, will showcase how residents get their green on to reduce, reuse and recycle.
