Editor's note: Hidden Houston, an interactive multimedia series, reveals the many things that are unique about the Bayou City and its surrounding area. This is the first installment.
For the last 30 years, Stephen Klineberg, professor of sociology at Rice University and co-director of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research, has been tracking the remarkable changes in population patterns, economic outlooks, experiences and beliefs of Harris County residents.
This vignette covers a glimpse of the Houston region since the collapse of the oil-boom in the 1980s to find itself in the midst of a restructured economy and a demographic revolution.
