"I Hid the Body . . ."
A new social media prank puts the police on edge — and Texas is one of itshotspots
Pinterest, the content sharing website which has become the latest social media sensation with its instant pinning of your favorite ideas — all to inspire and spread awareness among linked users — is getting used for something else new.
It's now the reason prank texts go wrong.
An Arkansas teenager thought it would be clever to send a stranger a message after reading a photo post on Pinterest that says: "When I'm bored, I send a text to a random number saying 'I hid the body . . . now what?' "
Granted, the random number this Arkansas teen picked to text just so happened to be a homicide police detective's, but she's hardly the only teen who has latched onto the prank. This viral photo has made its way through all the popular social media platforms, racking up an impressive number of hits.
Luckily for the 15-year-old Arkansas girl, she got away with just a warning, but here in Texas, Fort Worth detectives are taking this trend seriously.
There have been four reported cases in the past three weeks that have all been found to be Hid the Body pranks after pointless investigations were performed. Four cases where someone texted some stranger with "I hid the body . . . now what?" that launched police investigations.
Detectives are irritated that precious time is being taken away from real cases to look into pranks. Fort Worth police say they will be arresting and charging future pranksters with Class A misdemeanors that could land them up to a year in prison.
