City Hall bomb scare brings conflicting stories & more questions
Was somebody tied up in knots over the Toy Story 3 not taking Best Picture at the Academy Awards? Monday morning, what was initially feared to be a bomb on the steps of City Hall was determined to be a duffle bag containing toys covered in tape, reports KTRK Ch. 13.
Or perhaps the luggage was loaded by a disgruntled handyman. According to a Houston Chronicle report, the bag contained nails, wires and magazines and was made to look like a bomb.
The conflicting reports highlight the still unsure nature of the incident. Everyone agrees that the duffle didn't contain any actual explosives. The bomb squad detonated the bag remotely, just to be safe.
The scene created a rush hour disruption downtown: Authorities temporarily barricaded Bagby Street in both directions at about 7:30 a.m., and City Hall employees were not permitted in the building until 8:30 a.m. The Houston Police Department called in a bomb squad to investigate the "bomb" remotely, after which members of the squad and HPD provided conflicting reports.
A Reuters report comes close to merging the various stories, with HPD spokesman Kese Smith telling the news service that the bag had protruding wires with an unspecified toy inside.
