The Aftermath
Husband of the River Oaks murder victim speaks out on mental illness & hiskiller son
Daniel Shank spoke publicly about his son John Shank's mental illness for the first time since the younger Shank allegedly killed his mother, Nancy Shank, in her River Oaks home. The December incident produced major headlines in no small part because of the zip code of the killing.
Speaking to KTRK Ch. 13, Shank elaborated on his son's mental state. John Shank was hospitalized for mental illness twice in 2010 and threatened to harm himself by jumping off the roof of the home on Overbrook days before the fatal altercation.
"Let me say this, historically, my son was a wonderful young man. He's obviously suffering from mental illness. This is a tragedy for me, my wife, for my daughter and for my son. Mental illness is a very difficult thing to deal with and I firmly believe that this was a result of a psychotic break," Dan Shank said. "We have been trying to help him deal with mental issues, and unfortunately it just didn't work out."
John Shank has been charged with murder and his attorney, Dan Cogdell, says his defense will be based on Shank's mental illness.
"I'd like the criminal justice system to treat him appropriately and I think that needs to be worked out with the lawyers and the district attorney's office," Dan Shank said.
