Bootylicious
Say what? Beyoncé is inspiration for horsefly with golden booty; new marijuanadubbed "Blue Ivy"
There is perhaps no higher honor than to have something named for you. But what if that something was a pesky, blood-sucking horsefly?
Bryan Lessard, a researcher at Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, was responsible for describing an unnamed species of fly. It had a remarkable booty so, of course, he decided to name it after the most bootylicious of all: Beyoncé Knowles.
"It was the unique dense golden hairs on the fly's abdomen that led me to name this fly in honour of the performer Beyoncé as well as giving me the chance to demonstrate the fun side of taxonomy — the naming of species."
"It was the unique dense golden hairs on the fly's abdomen that led me to name this fly in honour of the performer Beyoncé as well as giving me the chance to demonstrate the fun side of taxonomy — the naming of species," said Lessard, who dubbed the specimen Scaptia (Plinthina) beyonceae, in a statement.
The rare horsefly was collected in 1981, the year of Beyoncé's birth, in Queensland's Atherton Tablelands.
"Although often considered a pest, many species of horsefly are extremely important pollinators of many plants," Lessard explained. He hopes that the pop star won't be offended.
Bey's isn't the only name in the family making news — her baby girl, Blue Ivy Carter, has been honored with a namesake strain of marijuana.
According to TMZ.com, multiple Hollywood weed dispensaries have been seen to carry "OG Blue Ivy." And though Jay-Z and Beyoncé haven't okayed the buds, they haven't threatened legal action, either.
