The Out List has a Houston moment: Groundbreaking HBO documentary hits home
From Ellen DeGeneres and Neil Patrick Harris to Wanda Sykes and Suze Orman, Timothy Greenfield-Sanders interviewed some of the biggest names in the LGBTQ community for The Out List — the newest documentary in an acclaimed HBO series that includes The Black List and The Latino List.
In conjunction with the the film's release, Greenfield-Sanders shared an exclusive set of Out List prints with the Hiram Butler Gallery, offering Houstonians a rare chance to see the legendary photographer's striking work firsthand.
"The List projects started with this idea of a talking portrait," Greenfield-Sanders told CultureMap during a recent interview at the gallery. "I've always felt you can look at a portrait get something more out of it than just portraiture or photography. There's something else there . . . What if this person could talk back to you?"
Since 2008, the photographer has used the technique to weave a tapestry of American voices that includes artists, athletes, politicians and porn stars. Next on Greenfield-Sanders' list?
