Local students showcase Houston through unique lens at new MFAH exhibition
For over two decades, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston has helped local high school students tell their stories through the narration of a camera lens.
The annual "Eye on Houston: High School Documentary Photography" exhibition gives young Houstonians the opportunity to show the city their lives and perspective on the world, while also celebrating their artistic achievements.
For the 23rd year of the event, MFAH organizers found that the individual stories of Houston during and after Harvey became a central focus of many of the student photographers. Taken together, they perhaps tell the collective tale of how we suffered, survived, and revived.
All Houston Independent School District high schools were invited to participate, and the museum received more than 330 submissions. The final 64 photographs by 42 junior and senior students chosen for the exhibition reflect the vibrant multiplicity of the city’s neighborhoods, while also at times highlighting some commonalities of young Houstonians’ personal experiences.
The work chosen for this year’s exhibition come from artists attending Bellaire High School, Booker T. Washington High School, Carnegie Vanguard High School, DeBakey High School for Health Professions, Jack Yates High School, Westbury High School, Westside High School, and Wisdom High School.
The exhibition includes photography from HISD students Andrew Abdalla; Maddie Benzuly; Larissa Bernstein; Tieranni Brim; Ashley Briseno; Taahir Busaidy; Destiny Carrier; Maria Casas; Ana Cortez; Amya Dupree; Thomas Freeman; Giovanna Gonzalez; Marcus Gonzalez; Ka'javion Graham; Audry Guerra; Jamal Hanney; Emily Hawes; Jacklyn Helm; Maya Kanani; Hannah Kazmouz; Gabby Knotts; Paula Diaz Linares; Lewis Man; Muskan Manzoor; Rocio Martinez; Gabriela Mejia; Kiara Menjivar; Saajan Patel; Ella Phelps; Vanessa Perez; Guadalupe Ramirez; Nevaeh Richardson; Daisi Rivera; Tiffany Say; Maya Singh; Yzette Torres; Huy Truong; Christina Watson; Mirya J.
