TUTS Musical Whirl
TUTS eclectic musical lineup ranges from Gershwin to pink ladies and lesbians
Theatre Under the Stars' 2016-17 lineup, released Saturday, includes an eclectic lineup that ranges from a classic American musical set in Paris to a Tony-Award winning-story about a lesbian cartoonist who details her own coming out and grapples with her closeted father's death a few months later.
From poodle skirts to Gershwin tunes, here's the rundown on TUTS' upcoming season, where there's something for everyone.
Grease (September 13-25, 2016)
Who doesn't know the musical story of Danny and Sandy's school-age '50s romance? Even so, the stage version of Grease is always fun. Filled with sock hops, drive-ins and high school drama, the TUTS production will probably have you wanting to sing along, too.
How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (October 25-November 6, 2016)
Guided by a surprisingly useful self-help manual, Ponty Finch climbs the corporate ladder and makes his way from being a window washer to a high-powered executive in this classic satire about the superficiality of big business. The musical won a Tony Award for Best Musical and boasts a classic score.
Shrek The Musical (December 6-18, 2016)
A silver screen favorite, the good-hearted ogre sings and dances on stage as he journeys to save the lovely Princess Fiona. The hilarious musical tale follows Shrek and his pals (don't forget about Donkey) as they rescue the princess from the evil Lord Farquaad.
An American in Paris (February 21-March 5, 2017)
In this spirited new Tony Award-winning musical, a young American soldier and a mysterious French girl yearn for new beginnings in the aftermath of war. The production — which earned more awards than any other musical in the 2014-15 season, including the Tony Award for Best Choreography — conveys the magic and romance of Paris, paired with unforgettable songs by George and Ira Gershwin.
Jesus Christ Superstar (April 4-16, 2017)
This 1970s rock opera offers a contemporary chronicle of the last weeks of Jesus' life, blending powerhouse hits from musical masters Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to wow audiences for more than 40 years.
Fun Home (May 16-28, 2017)
The winner of five 2015 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Fun Home takes a unique look at family life. Based on Alison Bechdel's best-selling graphic memoir, the groundbreaking musical follows her at three different periods in her life as she explores and unravels the many mysteries of her family and childhood.
