    Happy Hour Paradise

Happy Hour paradise: 5 sexy new hotspots with great deals on drinks — and appetizers, too

When the work whistle blows, head to these five new hotspots for your ticket to happy hour paradise. All offer great deals on drinks and light bites — and a guaranteed good time. Cheers.

    Public Services Wine & Whisky

Feel right at home at this spacious yet welcoming downtown bar. Ample seating, including several comfy sofas, makes it a great gathering place for groups. For those drinking solo, grab a seat at the bar and strike up a conversation with newfound friends. The well-executed drink list, whisky and wine-centric, isn't heavy on cocktails, but it is solid, guaranteeing you’ll find something that hits the spot.

Swing by during happy hour (daily; 4-6:30 p.m.) and save on classics like gin and tonic, rum and Coke, and vodka and soda ($5 each). You'll also save on select beers ($3), red and white wines by the glass ($5), 3-ounce pours of sherry ($3), and a duo of snacks: nuts and seeds ($5) and sweet pickles ($5).

    Robard’s

The Woodlands recently got a new steakhouse, and a new social hour deal (Monday-Saturday; 4-6 p.m.) along with it. Enjoy the bargain on draft beers ($2 off), wines by the glass ($3 off) and low-cost appetizers (think: prime rib sliders, filet mignon pizza and Guiness braised brats) while you mingle at the 60-foot titanium granite bar and take in the floor-to-ceiling view of the picturesque Panther Trail golf course at The Woodlands Resort.

    Nightingale Room

Have a rockin’ good time at the sexy downtown hot spot with vinyl spins and stellar drinks. The happy hour menu (weekdays; 4-7 p.m.) offers half off cocktails from a Cosmopolitan ($5) to the Airmail (white rum, lime and honey topped with champagne; $6) as well as draft beers, wells and wines by the glass.

Crank the party up a notch with any or all of three shots ($6 each). Share a shooter of the large-format French Mind Eraser (gin, St. Germain, champagne), sip on the blended and chilled Branca Menta and Maker’s Mark, down the Mexican Razor Blade (blanco tequila, lemon and cayenne), but keep the fun in check, particularly while standing under the mirrored ceiling.

    Museum Park Cafe

Hit the happy hour superfecta at the contemporary restaurant in the Museum District. The combination of specially priced food, wine, cocktails and beer (weekdays; 5-7 p.m.) is a clear winner. The roster of fare ($5-$10) features scallion and cheddar biscuits (drizzled with salumi caramel sauce) and the Blue Label Burger (topped with caramelized onions and cheddar, served with fries). Don't miss out on $5 wines by the glass, $4 beers and $6 cocktails such as the must-try 004 Proletariat (gin, lemon, hibiscus and thyme).

    Prohibition Supperclub and Bar

The swank downtown venue, which houses a restaurant and connecting bar up front and a theater in back for private parties and performances by sultry burlesque troupe, Moonlight Dolls, is spicing things up with a just launched happy hour deal (weekdays; 3-6 p.m.). Indulge in libations — ranging from an Old Fashioned ($5) and Cobble Gobble (bourbon, basil, vermouth and grilled sweet potato syrup; $7) to a bottle of Perrier Jouet ($55) — for a steal. Pair your drink with discounted bites, especially the always classic, champagne and oysters ($6; half dozen).

At Robard's, enjoy bargains on draft beers ($2 off), wines by the glass ($3 off) and low-cost appetizers.

Wine-obsessed Houston restaurateur honors Napa with new Montrose eatery

Succulent Fine Dining will occupy the former Pastore space.

Houston’s most champagne-obsessed restaurateur is bringing another wine-focused concept to Montrose. A’Bouzy owner Shawn Virene is opening Succulent Fine Dining this spring.

Located in the former Pastore space in the Regent Square mixed-use development, Succulent takes its inspiration from California’s Napa Valley. The restaurant will source much of its produce from the West Coast as well as local farms, paired with a wine list focused on Californian vintages.

To execute the restaurant’s ingredient-driven, seasonally-inspired dishes, Virene has recruited California native David Buckley to serve as executive chef. The chef’s resume includes hotels and restaurants in California and Hawaii, as well as The Woodlands Resort and The Westin at The Woodlands.

Plans call for a comprehensive set of renovations to the short-lived Italian restaurant. In particular, Virene plans to make the second-floor patio a destination, with private greenhouses, pergolas, and shade trees that are designed to provide all-weather utility. Other changes include the installation of a chef’s table with a view of the kitchen and a private dining room.

Just like a’Bouzy, Succulent will be open for lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch. Its to-go options will include picnic baskets that may be consumed at Regent Square’s green space.

“My dream is to create a space where fine dining feels approachable and engaging, bringing the essence of vineyard dining to Houston,” Virene said in a statement. “The menu will highlight the best local and West Coast ingredients while embracing the tranquility of nature. This vision is deeply personal to me — gardening and fishing are hobbies that inspire me and allow me to escape from the day-to-day. That’s how I recharge, and Succulent will allow me to share that with my guests.”

Virene opened a’Bouzy in 2017 after a successful stint as Brasserie 19’s general manager. The restaurant is known for its extensive champagne list, which features more than 250 selections, as well as its expansive outdoor patio and see-and-be-seen crowd.
