Severe downtown flooding jammed the Travis Street ramps to I-45 and the I-10 HOV lanes on Thursday, making for a dramatic scene just below the University of Houston–Downtown.
CultureMap grabbed a quick picture as Houston police directed traffic through and away from the scene. Large trucks glided though the streets with relative ease, while some poor souls in sedans barely avoided getting stuck.
A manhole next to a Travis Street appeared to cause most of the flooding as it gushed absolutely putrid water that clearly spent some time in the city sewer system.
As of noon, the Harris County Flood Control Department reports that a number of area waterways are nearing the tops of their banks, including Clear Creek at I-45, Willow Creek at Kuykendahl Road and South Mayde Creek at Greenhouse Road and I-10.
A flood advisory from the National Weather Service remains in effect throughout Harris County for the much of the early afternoon. Drivers in Midtown Houston, the Memorial Villages, Friendswood, Bellaire, West University Place, Sugar Land, Pasadena, Clear Lake, La Porte, Katy and Deer Park should take extra precaution.
