    wicked ways

Houstonians scare up a wickedly fun time at $1.1 million museum gala

    Steven Devadanam
    Oct 21, 2019 | 6:00 am

The angels. The devils. The Tin Man! The Children’s Museum of Houston gala showcased a cast of cool characters that ranged from spooky to sexy to silly, but all in good fun and keeping with a delightful theme of “A Wicked Affair.” (So much so, that some in black tie wondered if they were under-dressed.)

Event co-chairs Ashley and Walter Weathers (dressed as an enchanting witch and daring Dracula, respectively) and Lyndsey and Bret Zorich (she festooned in an scene-stealing Tinkerbell getup with LED light wings and he as Captain Hook) welcomed more than 500 guests into The Corinthian, which was transformed into a “spellbinding mansion,” replete with dangling candelabras, sinister owls, and sickly-twisted branches by Bergner and Johnson.

The Children’s Museum of Houston annual event draws some of Houston’s hottest young professionals and merry-makers who are ready to party — and spend. So, just how good was this naughty affair? The gala raised $1.1 million for the museum’s numerous programs.

After mingling and cocktails (such as black diamond margaritas made with Maestro Dobel Tequila) guests made their way to their tables, were they were treated to a delectable treat by Jackson & Co.; the menu included a variety of hors d’oeuvres like pork tenderloin croustade, shrimp sushi, barbecued duck confit, and more. The main course featured a coffee-crusted filet mignon with red wine sauce, accompanied by roasted purple potatoes.

Chocolate cake coffins (a table favorite) and glazed strawberry tarts provided a sweet finish. As the spirited group noshed, a lively auctioneer urged the crowd to bid on myriad enviable items, the show-stopper being a tiny, 12-week-old terrier puppy from Houston & Harris County Animal Volunteers, who stole the heart of bidder Annabel Massey.

Also up for grabs were dinner for 50 at First National Bank vault in the basement of the Corinthian (valued at over $18,000); a game from behind home plate at a Houston Astros 2020 season game; exotic travel packages to Antigua, Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, and The Grenadines; a trip to a live taping of Wheel of Fortune; a “shop till you drop” trip to Neiman Marcus, and more.

Energized, the partiers hit the dance floor, serenaded by the Matt Wilson Band. Those who stayed late were treated to savory late-night bites and chocolate covered cookie party favors donated by The Chocolate Bar.

While the evening saw a playoff loss by the Houston Astros (we know how that turned out, yes?), the event was a big win for one of Houston’s most venerable houses of learning and enchantment.

The naughty and nice crowd included Amanda and Terry Boffone, Stacy Johnson, Jenny May, Melissa Sugulas, Hector Villarreal, Baye and Martin Tilson, Rachel and Tom Regan, Neekie and Amir Kashani, and a host of others. (Kudos to the event chairs and the Tin Man, better known as the tireless Henry Yau of the Children’s Museum of Houston.)

    Vintage Vibes

Wine and resilience shine at Houston nonprofit's glamorous soirée

The Women’s Fund poured on the charm at its 10th Annual Wine Dinner, trading its usual intimate digs for The Astorian’s lofty glamour and a vibe as effervescent as the night’s first pour. Picture white feathers flirting with candlelight, rosé-hued roses blushing in Revere bowls, and a crowd dressed to toast, taste, and turn up for a cause.

Chairs Vanessa and Chuck Ames led the swirl, sip, and support soirée, where guests kicked things off with passed bites and bubbly from Amy and Rob Pierce and Alexandra Bruskoff. Jackson and Co. served up crispy artichokes, mushroom Wellington, tuna carpaccio, and beef tartare, perfectly paired with cava and casual elegance.

The Madam Zero Champagne Wall added sparkle and suspense, doling out deBoulle gift cards and a private champagne tasting. Meanwhile, the silent auction table buzzed with high-stakes bids for year-long date nights, Zadok's bling, a Chopped-worthy in-home dinner by chef Lena Le, and more.

Dinner dazzled across four courses: Steelhead carpaccio with Meyer lemon sabayon and Texas Vermentino; wild mushroom agnolotti matched with a Russian River Pinot; charcoal-grilled filet cozied up to Tuscan red; and a bittersweet chocolate tart so luxe it got its own sponsor, Armine+Ambrose.

Mid-meal pop-up auctions turned tables into tasting salons with caviar and Burgundies flowing like insider gossip. And when it came time to raise paddles, auctioneer Johnny Holloway of Johnny Bravo Productions kept the energy high and the giving higher. Think Majorca vacations (sold twice), Rockets suite nights, Napa getaways, and a cameo on Chris Shepherd's Eat Like a Local that also sold — you guessed it — twice.

The evening honored the inaugural Toast to Resilience Class. Paulina and Jim McGrath earned the Visionary Spirit Award, Gina Gaston Elie was honored with the Resilient Heart Award, and Chris Shepherd and Lindsey Brown received the Champions of Community Award—each recognized for lifting up Houston’s women and girls with compassion, creativity, and serious clout.

By the end of the night, guests had raised an impressive $485,000. That’s more than double last year's total. With more than 250 oenophiles in attendance, the event proved that good wine and a great cause make for one worthy pairing.

Supporters raising their glasses included Anne and John Clutterbuck, Ashley Sere, Meredith and Ben Marshall, Jessica and Brian Leeke, Brian Faulkner, Caroline and Matt Monday, Lisa and Charlie Meachem, Corbin Young, Craig and Kristin Kellogg, Jordan and Dylan Seff, Lisa Meacham, Kelly and Frank Hogan, George Breen, Megan and Jerry Hughes Jr., Jillian and Yuri Waldo, Erin and Kyle Cummings, Nadia Tajalli, Paula Sutton, Rania Mankarious, Laura Ward, Sarah Barrett, Shellie McBeth, Steve Jetton, Steve Mohtashami, Aliza Dutt, Danny Ward and Nancy Ames, James Calaway, Jody Merritt, Kristen Collins, Kristy Bradshaw, Laura Davenport, Mario Elie, Nene Foxhall, Roxann and Tim Neumann, and Nora Jarrard.
